| Subject: Bargain-hunting Brits shop 'til they drop Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:31 am | |
| How long would you take to look for a bargain? An hour, a morning... a day?
According to new research, the average British woman spends eight months over the course of her life, searching for slashed-price clothes and discounted goods.
In fact, almost 50 per cent of the 4,000 women surveyed said they tried their best to avoid paying full price for anything.
The survey questioned 18- to 45-year-olds about their shopping habits and found the average bargain-hunter will spend 20 minutes wandering through stores.
With the majority making a trip to the high street eight times a month, the search for the perfect cut-price purchase takes two hours and 40 minutes out of a four-week period.
This year bargain-hunting looks like becoming a national pastime, with 60 per cent saying they were now "watching the pennies". And with the VAT increase due on January 4, a third of British women are set to hit the high street this week.
Four in 10 admitted that bagging a bargain was a thrill but 29 per cent almost instantly felt guilty about their purchases... which may explain why a quarter of the women polled confessed to making up excuses to justify their spending.
Paula Felstead of HotVouchers.com, which carried out the research, told the Daily Mail: "We always knew women loved a bargain, but to discover they spend a full eight months of their lives seeking out the best deals is quite something.
"Women have a good eye for a deal, enjoying the thrill of getting something at a discounted price. Yet despite making savings, they still feel guilty and use excuses to try to justify their purchase to their husband or boyfriend."
But boyfriends, husbands and partners should take note - Ms Felstead added: "Bargain-hunting will be a very useful skill during 2011."
We're off to get some practice in.
