Discuss The Bedroom Tax Empty
PostSubject: Discuss The Bedroom Tax   Discuss The Bedroom Tax Icon_minitimeWed Feb 27, 2013 2:55 am

As of April 2013 our government and Council is bringing in something called "The Bedroom Tax", where by people who live in rented accomodation owned by the Council will be charged a set price for any bedrooms that are not being used.

If you cant pay for the empty rooms, then you are free to re house yourself by doing your own searches, however you will not be entitled to any monies to help support your move or for carpets, furniture ect ect.

This will not affect pensioners or people who are renting from private land lords, only those on low income and bennefits that are getting assistance with their rent and council tax.

What will happen is, instead of getting the rent help you have been getting, it will be minus the amount they are asking for each empty room, putting you in arrears if you dont pay each week.

I have since read that
Tenants will be able to keep rental income from lodgers without it affecting their benefit entitlement under proposed rule changes.

Currently, claimants must declare income from lodgers. This can affect their entitlement to housing benefit, jobseekers’ allowance and income support.

Under the new regulations, from October 2013 tenants will be able to keep income from lodgers and retain full entitlement to benefit. The room let to a lodger will, however, be classed as a spare room and fall under the bedroom tax, which will be £14 per week on average.

Now this may seem fair enough if you are willing to take in lodgers, but i wonder if that will apply to my 21 year old daughter who still lives with me ? hmmmm.

Alot of people are up in arms about this and the effects its going to have on peoples lives ect, what do you make of it all and does any other country have anything like this ?

The question you raised about your adult daughter living with you is a very good question. Will there be a law made saying children have to move into their own home at a certain age? These politicians have way too much time on their hands and not enough common sense in their heads.

Another update from the Huffington Post

Greg Mulholland said

"I am delighted that as a result of Liberal Democrat pressure the secretary of state has announced that families with severely disabled children who cannot share with a sibling, Armed Forces families and foster carers will now be exempt from the loss of part of their housing benefit."

At least thats something i suppose xxx
