What:
Free dog microchipping Get by: Ongoing
How:
Book an appointment (subject to availability) at one of the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centres.
What do I get? A free microchip, the size of a grain of rice, for dogs inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Vets usually charge around £30 for the procedure. Owners also get their details stored on the microchip database for free.
The tiny implant includes a unique ID number which means if your dog goes missing, it's easier to trace as the code can be read by radio-wave scanners. The process takes about 10 minutes. For more information, see the Dogs Trust Microchipping page.
The detail: There are no restrictions on how many dogs can be microchipped per owner, as long as you book an appointment in advance at one of the 17 Dogs Trust Rehoming Centres (the website shows 18, but this one opens in June). Any breed, two months old or over can be microchipped.
