PostSubject: Beauty in Your Forties: Makeup, Skin and Style Tips For Women In Their 40’s   Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:01 am

So, you’re partying days of your 20’s are over, your stressful days of your 30’s are fading and you feel like you finally know exactly who you are. But, as you look in the mirror you may worry and start to have trouble recognizing the woman starting back at you. As you are leaving 30s behind, instead of going forward with fear be sure to embrace your new age with an updated skin care and makeup outlook. The best things about your 40s is the fact you can still have fun without worrying about every little “crisis” life throws your way. So, embrace your new life joys and age!

Age Appropriate Makeup Advice: Women In Their Early To Late Forties

Maybe you spent too much time in the sun when you were younger or maybe you just didn’t think about skin care before now, but chances are you are now noticing the sun damage and signs of aging from your past. You might have blotchiness, red spots and fine lines appearing. As you’re aging and turning fourty years old, your skin is changing too. It’s losing collagen and elasticity so it will retain much less moisture. This ultimately means you’ll not only start noticing more wrinkles but also lose some of your natural glow. You need to continue to preserve, maintain and repair your skin.

Skin Care: Women In Their 40’s

By your 40th birthday, you should already be in a great skin care and beauty routine. However, it needs to change a bit as you enter this new decade of life and celebrate. Things you should know already about skin care should only be modified a bit. Start using a creamy cleanser both day and night (skip the gel) and follow with a broad-spectrum moisturizer with SPF 15 or 20. Find a moisturizer with at least two kinds of antioxidants such as green tea, soy or lycopene. Different antioxidants target different things in the skin. You can also find a formula with peptides to help collagen strength. If you have dry skin problems, try something with shea butter, petrolatum or hyaluronic acid. Always use a nighttime treatment to help reduce brown spots, soften your lines and thicken your epidermis (prescription retinoid is recommended). Words of wisdom: if the prescription retinoid bothers your skin, try it every other night.

ge Appropriate Makeup and Cosmetics: Women In Their 40’s

Much like your hair has changed over the years to fit your age and style, so should your make up style. While facts may tell you that you should go with the “mom makeup” you may find yourself curious with thoughts about new makeup trends. As long as the trends don’t involve neon colored eye shadow or glitter, go for them!

When choosing a foundation in your 40s, think about spending a little more to get one with a built in SPF 15 or 20 and peptides. This will help you get the coverage you need and build in extra skin care benefits at the same time. Always opt to use a concealer to help cover up that redness and blotchiness you’re likely seeing from past sun damage. Apply the foundation first and then the concealer, blending both together to get a seamless look. Dealing with a foundation and concealer from the same brand can be helpful, as blending two brands together can bring great difficulty if you want natural results.

Keep the blush light and focused on the apples of your cheeks, looking for natural glowing colors to help you gain back some of the natural glow time is taking away from your skin.

Instead of using heavy lipstick and liner, think about getting a tinted gloss or cream lipstick that will allow you to have a youthful look on your lips. When doing this, try to stay away from dark colors and opt for melon colors, pink colors, peach colors or chic nude colors.

Eye shadow colors of brown, gray, silver or purple are often great for those in their 40’s. Be sure not to overdo it with the eyeshadow and unless you don’t have very many eye area wrinkles be sure to steer clear of frosty formulas and only use them for highlighting purposes. Also, remember to keep your eyebrows perfectly plucked or waxed and use a soft eyebrow powder to fill in any sparse areas instead of a heavy eyebrow pencil.

Nice! So many companies are saying their products are capable of so very much. It is quite frustrating and somewhat has become annoying to me. Just because we are mature women does not give them a need to speak of us as freaks. Hello, God willing we all age beyond our so called youthful years. Anyway I am ranting.
Thanks for posting this Wendy.

surely we dont have to spend fortunes to help to look after our skin and to choose suitable make up just because we have hit 40 ?

I was kind of hopeing i could find something suitable for my skin type and stick with it until im ready to expand on it.

As for make up, do the different brands affect our skin differently ? because i dont have a large budget and im just starting out so i need all the help going girls .

Whew made it back, rainstorms going on here, ah the joys of springtime.

I so agree Wendy, these articles are addressing the mature woman's questions wonderfully.

OH gosh Sharron we sure dont have to spend fortunes to look after our skin and to look wonderful.

I stand by the belief that high end companies... are selling a bunch of nonsense for their asking price. People will talk about AHA. BHA. peptides, collagen, retinols etc... when all it truly breaks down to is that each of us must keep our skin moisturized beyond the top layer.

I have talked some about it on here but I am truly holistic when it comes to skin care. I have said goodbye to all the packaged moisturizers and embrace olive oil and coconut oil for my day and night routine.

As for makeup, the debate will never end on high end vs low end cosmetics. It is my belief that "you get what you pay for" does not apply to makeup. Different brands do affect our skin differently, Above all remember that each of us are unique. A makeup product that is awful on me may indeed be beautiful on you. I see you are in the UK, lucky you... you have access to No 7, Barry M, Rimmel to name a few. IF you use youtube look up gossmakeupartist, he has recently talked about a lot of duplicates or "dupes" for high end products at a mere fraction of the cost for the high end.

I no longer have the money and mostly importantly if I did I no longer have the need to buy those high end items to feel and look great!

I would like to suggest going to web sites of stores and looking for free samples of makeup. Become a major searcher for coupons online to print off, or newspapers, magazines, whatever you have handy. Look toward others that are similar with your skin, tones, colors, and preferences of makeup, check out what they use, be it neighbors, coworkers, family, friends. Swapping products is also a great thing to do, a spritz of alcohol or vodka if you prefer sanitizes the makeup good as new so dont be afraid of that... well except mascara, thats a no no. LOL.

I need to learn more about you, your skin type, your makeup likes, your lifestyle, stuff like that so that I could make product suggestions in confidence. LOL I want to go on and on about this,,, I love this sort of discussion.

some great ideas BluegrassMaddie thankyou.

Im afraid my story is a little boreing, im a 40 yr old stay at home mother, single, i dont go out too much as i lost a lot of my confidence after my divorce, hence starting to mess with make up and new clothing ideas that might put me back on the market and get me out again.

My skin/face is a bit weird, its pretty sensitive but is prone to some dry patches so i tend to stick to non perfumed products as much as i can, unless i find something that doesnt irrate me or break me out.

as for collecting coupons and cutting them out of the paper ect, thats something ive never done, not because im too proud, its just no one i know uses them either so it never dawned on me until now, perhaps i should start thinking about it, even if its just for samples ect.

OH how I would love to start quoting Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou. It has a wonderful message and helps settles all the negatives we see in ourselves as women.

Seriously look around online for free sample offers of different makeup. It beats the heck out of paying even a small price for a product that may not work for you.

I fully understand about the coupon thing, but I truly believe they are worth the time and effort. I am not a mad coupon user, but Sunday papers especially just have some that cant be ignored.

If you use youtube at all please look up gossmakeupartist, he has several vids on drugstore products there in the UK... Sleek, MUA, and several others.

There is a newer foundation called NatureLuxe that is a dream for dry skin. I was fortunate to get several samples of this through a promotion and have used them all, great stuff.

Even though I'm 22 I regularly makeup my dearest friend who's 42 and at the beginning I noticed two main difficulties.
Cover up dyschromia to give her an even skin (dark spots, I'm not sure how to spell it correctly)
Cover up dark circle for a fresh rested look.
Reason:
The problem is that the foundation, in my opinion has to be a very light formula and the most similar shade for your skin tone, very hydrating and possibly not highly pigmented. That's because I've noticed that the pigments follows the pattern of cumulating on the sinking part of the wrinkles with the result of looking extremely dry and making them appear more profound ( pigment as ingredients tent to be pretty dry particles of any colored products).

Solution: Beside choosing a moisturizing, possibly low pigmented product, avoid the use of powder and to fixate the make up before applying anything at all, use a transparent base to create a smooth "canvas" to begin with.
As routine use a good scrub if the skin feels corny and always, at every wash, moisturize.

Step 1- Scrub

Step 2 - Moisturizing

Step 3- Apply the transparent base

Step 4- Distribute with a foundation brush or a sponge a small quantity of light and moisturizing foundation to eliminate the risk of cumulations or excess on quantity

Step-4 Cover eventual spot with a very little amount of concealer. less the more natural. Avoid finishing with powder.

2-Puffiness under the eyes:
To avoid to accentuate puffiness under the eyes but cover dark circle use a tiny bit of a very close shade to your skin tone of concealer (not more then half tone lighter). If the concealer is too much or too light it will, by optical effect, accentuate the puffiness.

For my personal taste I love natural and even skin at any age. On specific occasions you can go an half tone lighter to achieve a glowing alabaster retrò look (during winter because on tanned skin it might result only grey), or half tone darker, especially in summer, to achieve a radiant and healthy appearance. Very, very small quantity of blush can be a passepartout ( I love orange this season, it matches every skin color if used in super subtle quantity on the upper external part of the cheekbone and not as a round circle on the side of the nose!)

Love!
